Andy Blackwell, ISARR’s Senior Risk and Security Advisor, explores some of the challenges faced by those responsible for policing airports around the globe and describes some of the key initiatives successfully being used to identify and manage the threats and risks facing these specialised environments.

Many airports are like small cities and have complex policing needs. In addition to the focus on counter-terrorism and protection of civil aviation, police officers working at airports and airfields deal with a wide spectrum of offences ranging from human trafficking and organised criminal activities to theft, fraud and public order offences.

In this article, we will give some examples of the constitution and organisation of police forces covering airports from around the globe, together with some of the key challenges they face based on information drawn from ISARR’s archives and disruptive events reports.

We will also look at policing initiatives that are proving valuable in the aviation environment.
