Security concerns in the 21st Century have brought new and increased challenges for global mobility. For staff who travel on business, the risks can be significant and all organisations must ensure they take their legal “Duty of Care” responsibilities seriously. Duty of Care is a legal obligation, under Tort Law, which is imposed on an individual or corporate body requiring adherence to a standard of reasonable care for any actions that could cause foreseeably harm.

This paper by Russ Huxtable, ISARR’s Head of Advisory and Strategic Lead, gives appropriate and proportionate guidance to those engaged in international business travel and those who have a responsibility towards them. To ensure all staff with managerial responsibility exercise the appropriate “Duty of Care”, this paper articulates the requirement for an appropriate risk assessment before international travel is undertaken. The outcome of this analysis must be that risks are mitigated and any residual risk can be justified in terms of risk benefit and personal safety.
